Introductory Letters

Local circumstances vary so much that I do not think it would be appropriate to invent a standard introductory letter. Instead I have copied here two letters we wrote when we were setting up the prayer rota in London, which may give you some ideas. Since our prayer rotas were part of our work as an organisation the letters do, of course, reflect this, but it is not necessary to be part of an organisation to set up a rota.

Introductory letter for starting Prayer vigils and fasting rotas.

Dear Friend and Supporter

In London there are six abortion clinics, as well as various hospitals which include abortion as a 'service'. As far as we know there is no regular picket or protest at any of them (any information to the contrary gratefully received). At Birmingham, Leeds,Manchester and Bournemouth they have regular, faithful pickets, and they have saved many children from death, and their mothers from possible injury and certain great sorrow. This example should spur us on to act.

It is our intention, with God's help, to set up a picket at each of the places of death, starting with the six private clinics.

This is where you come in!
We need help in four different ways:
If you think you can help us in any of these ways, please fill in the form below, and return it to: (Name and address of organiser)

Please help us to help these children, whose angels are continually before the face of God, pleading their cause. God bless you.

Yours in Christ

Introductory Letter after the set-up of the prayer vigils

Dear X

Thank you for expressing interest in our organisation. Here is a little information about the history of the movement, and its aims and objectives.

In November of 1991 an American Bishop, Austin Vaughan, spoke to a group of people in London about the work he has done in opposing procured abortion in the United States. He has joined on numerous "Rescue" operations, and has been arrested several times for so doing. A Rescue is a non-violent intervention by Christians at an abortion facility, to try to prevent the deaths of children. Rescuers link arms, block doors, occupy buildings, and have been known to disarm the killing machines. Despite the mendacious claims of the press, they are not violent.

Following on the bishop's talk on the subject of his experience, I wrote to the people who had attended the meeting and asked them if they would be prepared to do various things - pray and picket at abortion clinics; fast and pray for one day a month for the closure of specific abortion centres; contribute financially towards a fund which would help to maintain the pickets and assist women who turn to us in need during a crisis pregnancy; offer short or long term accommodation for a woman in these circumstances.

People have offered to do all these things. Since October 1991 there have been people fasting and praying for the closure of the clinics. Since February 1992 there have been regular pickets at two London clinics. We have had mothers ring us up to thank us for being there and to ask for help. We have given such help as is within our means, both financially and in the more difficult area of personal and emotional support. We have seen many turning away, although the eventual fate of most of these is not known to us.

We have seen a woman being dragged to the clinic, saying 'I want to keep it'.(Two of us were arrested for trying to stop this). We have seen the blood of the children, quite literally, spilt on the street in front of one of these places. We have turned people back, only to see them return another day. We have prayed and wept and suffered all manner of verbal abuse.

About twenty-six babies (possibly) owe their lives to the fact that by God's grace we said the word which altered the mother's heart. We have rejoiced in tiny victories, and commended all to the protection of God, through the intercession of Our Lady and of all the saints. We do not always see all the good that is done by our work, but God does.

That is what our Organisation does.

If you are interested in helping us with our work, please fill in the slip below and return it to (Name and address of Organiser)

Dear X

Thank you for offering to help in fasting and praying for the closure of a particular abortion clinic. Please could you fast on (Fast Date/Dates), and pray for (*Your Aim*). Pray especially for* the conversion of the staff, for the mothers(families), and for the success of the pro-life work. I will be in touch with you about further dates. If for any reason you cannot manage this particular day, transfer your fast to the nearest convenient date, preferably before the date assigned, and pray as for that day.

The response to my appeal has been more than generous, though we hope to get more people.
